GENIAL, with 30 partners, is based on a unique track (semester 1: UL- semester 2: LBU- semester 3: LTU- semester 4: Core or Associate Partners) for all cohorts through Semesters 1 to 3 to ensure the delivery of the global picture (and interactions between ICT technologies) and to provide similar learning environments, experiences, and also promote cohesion amongst each student cohort.

UL

The University of Lorraine (UL) was created on the 1st of January 2012 from the merging of the 4 universities in the Region: Henri Poincaré University (UHP), University of Nancy 2 and Institut  National  Polytechnique de Lorraine in Nancy, and the Paul Verlaine–Metz University in Metz, which in 2010 produced 4320 peer reviewed publications, 28.6% of which with foreign co-authors.The  UL is multidisciplinary. It benefits from a central position in Europe with  the specificity to border three other countries (Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg). It enrols more than 53,000 students, 15% of which are foreign. It has a global budget of 588 millions euros, 3722 researchers and lectures, 3070 technical and administrative staff, 830000 square meters of buildings on 53 sites, 82 research laboratories, 29 “grandes  écoles” and faculties, 13 technical colleges in addition to 8 graduate schools.

LBU

Leeds Becket University (LBU) is a higher education corporation that provides access to education for a wide range of learners, promoting cultural awareness and diversity through our curriculum. Through our partnerships with schools, colleges, further education colleges and employers, we enable those with a willingness to learn to progress to higher education and a lifetime of learning.  Leeds Beckett has a lively international student community from over 120 countries.  Currently, there are about 30000 students on our courses, 3,000 staff and 300,000 associate students through our network of 24 partner colleges. LBU has been providing the following via Blackboard Vista (a Virtual Learning Environment): online teaching, learning, and assessment materials; discussion forum; Elluminate for e-Meetings; student evaluation of learning modules; provision of online feedback on assignments/assessments to students. The Faculty also numbers Google, Redhat, Zend, Techmesh, JANET (UK), Adobe, and APPLE among its recognized technology partners.

LTU

Luleå University of Technology (LTU) conducts research in the Faculty of engineering and the Faculty of arts and social sciences. Research is characterised by multidisciplinary cooperation between the University’s research departments and close interaction with trade and industry and society. Both major international and national companies and small enterprises in the region are involved in the University’s research and development projects.

LTU cooperates with universities worldwide. We also take part in the ERASMUS programme, ISEP (the International Student Exchange programme), and NORDPLUS within the Nordic countries. Each year, there are about 400 exchange students at LTU.

Associated Partners

GENIAL will collaborate with many university professors and researchers who provide complementary skills or perspectives to the Green IT and Greening by IT curriculum. Supplementary lectures or seminars are delivered by associate partners and visiting scholars. The associate partners will propose some Masters theses related to these topics in co-supervision with full partners.

ITMO University (Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics) is a large state university in Saint Petersburg and is one of Russia’s National Research Universities. ITMO University is one of 15 Russian universities that were selected to participate in Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100 by the government of the Russian Federation to improve their international competitiveness among the world’s leading research and educational centers. Research priorities of ITMO University are concentrated in information and photonic technologies. In the scope of GENIAL, it covers:

  • Information and Communication Technologies and Sustainable Development: the development of service-oriented networking (SDN), processing large quantities of data;
  • High-performance computing: a study of city processes, the extreme computation and processing of super-large data quantities;
  • Refrigeration industry and food industry: energy efficiency technologies for sustainable food processing.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), launched in 2009 by the University of Luxembourg (Uni.lu), aims to become a European centre of excellence and innovation for secure, reliable, and trustworthy ICT systems and services. With every passing year, SnT becomes larger and larger that is both an indication of the health of the Center and a necessary condition for establishing the SnT as a European center of excellence (by the end of 2014, some 240 people – among which 89 PhD candidates – were active at the Centre). SnT targets research and PhD education and provides a platform for interaction and collaboration between university researchers and external partners (industries, government bodies, institutions, and international actors) through its Partnership program. Also, collaborations with European partners play a very important role in SnT development, which is currently being ramped up through a number of new European projects contributing to increase its visibility. The Security Design and Validation Research Group (SERVAL) is primarily specialized in designing and validating secure systems and software including a wide range of functionalities. The domains of application concern Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, sensor networks, distributed systems, cloud computing, mobile Android apps.

National Aerospace University named after N.E. Zhukovsky “Kharkiv Aviation Institute” (KhAI) is one of the leading engineering Universities in Ukraine. KhAI participates in numerous international collaborative projects with academic and industrial partners from Germany, France, UK, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Greece, USA, Japan, Mexico, China, etc. It is a member of International Association of Universities IAU/UNESCO. Department of Computer Systems, Networks and Cyber Security is one of the most experienced KhAI’s divisions in the international collaboration. The following research and education directions are of the top priority: Green computing and communications; Cloud- and service-oriented systems security, dependability and performance; Safety and security of industrial systems; BigData and Internet of Things.


The Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR), has its origins in the School of Apprentices and Artificers founded in 1909. UTFPR has a long and expressive trajectory in professional education, whose history distinguishes it from the traditional or classical universities.
The University remains attentive to its main function as a disseminator of knowledge, seeking to comply with the demands of a nowadays complex world. To do so, offers Technical programs on high school level, Undergraduate (Technology, Bachelor and Teaching Degree), Specialization, Master and Doctorate programs.
UTFPR also plays a social and extension role, interacting with the productive sector and the community, performing applied research and developing cultural and sports projects.

The Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was established on the 1st of July 2010 as one of the multidisciplinary Institute within the structure of UKM, in the field of visual informatics. Visual Informatics represents one of the most challenging and inspiring areas of research in computer science and Information Technology, encompassing areas such as virtual reality, visualization, ubiquitous computing, simulation, intelligent data analytics, computer vision and image processing. IVI has one Principle Investigator, four Senior Research Fellows, seven Research Fellows and ten Associate Fellows. 


Located in the Region of the Araucanía, Chile, the Universidad de La Frontera (UFRO) is a state, public institution of higher learning, considered among the best universities in the country based on its remarkable indicators of quality and excellence.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of the top ranked Departments in the Faculty of Engineering and the University and currently has more than 1000 undergraduate and more than 120 PhD students. 

The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) is an Italian Government Agency operating on research, innovation technologies and advanced services in the fields of sustainable economic development and energy. It currently employs around 2,500 people located in 11 research centres throughout Italy. ENEA participates in the project through the Division of Information Systems and ICT Development belonging to the Energy Technologies Department.

The ICT Division has developed highly qualified expertise for what concerns high performance and distributed scientific computing, data transmission networks, heterogeneous systems integrations such as big tools and scientific laboratories, cloud computing, web-based applications, web services for information and communication. ENEA’s ICT Division runs CRESCO, a major High Performance Computing facility, in its research centre located in Portici (Naples).

Orange is a global operator with fixe, mobile and long range network and also with an important business activity. Orange gets an important activity in R&D and innovation and participate to some collaborative projects with academic and is involved also in open innovation. Orange carries out a lot of works to reduce its environmental foot print from the devices to the data center. Some European projects (Operanet2 & SoGreen) have to provide solutions to get this goal. Orange has been involved in eco design for products & services since 2007 and has since the beginning of its own history a huge experience in energy powering & thermal dissipation for all its telecom equipment & technical building. Orange has launch its first thinking in software eco design around 2011, and now the approach is near to be deployed. Orange is also involved in circular economy and is going to launch some project to evaluate what should be the architecture of the boxes (GW & TV decoder) to be in line with the circular economy business model.
